🔍 When to Reset Your Spotlight Search Index
- Search Results Are Incomplete or Wrong: Typing file names or apps yields missing results or wrong file locations.

⚠️ Hardware Note Before Reindexing: Rebuilding the Spotlight index causes intense drive read/write activity. If you are using an older mechanical hard drive (HDD) with slow speeds (30–50 MB/s), reindexing can take many hours and cause heavy system slowdowns. We strongly recommend upgrading older drives to a high-speed Solid-State Drive (SSD) or switching to an Apple Silicon Mac!
🛠️ How to Reset & Reindex Spotlight in macOS Settings
Follow these simple steps in modern macOS System Settings to force Spotlight to rebuild its database:
- Open the Apple menu () in the top-left corner of your screen and select System Settings.
- Scroll down the sidebar menu and click on Siri & Spotlight.
- Scroll to the bottom of the right panel and click the Spotlight Privacy… button.
- Drag your main drive (usually named Macintosh HD) into the list of locations that Spotlight is prevented from searching, or click the plus (+) button and select your drive.
- Click Done and close the window to save the privacy rule (this temporarily removes the current index).
- Re-open Spotlight Privacy…, select Macintosh HD from the list, and click the minus (-) button at the bottom to remove it.
- Click Done. macOS will automatically begin scanning and creating a fresh Spotlight search index!
⚡ Alternative Method: Terminal Command
Advanced users can also reset Spotlight instantly using the Terminal app by entering the following command:
sudo mdutil -E /
Press Enter, type your Mac administrator password, and press Enter again.
